How to stop unwanted email

Introduction

As the Internet seemingly takes over many aspects of our life it is so easy to forget that all may not be as it seems.

  • That person you enjoy chatting to online may be masquerading under a totally false identity.
  • That great offer to buy clothes may not be from a reputable retailer after all.

Once you have eagerly given your email address out to all and sundry you could be in for a shock. Your Internet  inbox could soon be overflowing with meaningless emails that may, initially, simply irritate but long term could damage your computer and more.

Protecting your identity and your computer is a must but where to start?

Instructions
Step 1
Better Safe Than Sorry

A sensible option may be to have more than one email address, but take care.

  • Ensure that you only use a reputable Internet service provider or that free email address could be yet another problem
  • Keep the addresses of your main email account for tried and tested uses and contacts.
  • Set up a free account, for example with Hotmail.com, for all other mailings and contacts..
  • Protect your email address, maintaining confidentiality, as it is precious.
  • If you email address once get caught up in spam you may find that your receive hundreds of recurring email messages as fast as you delete them. These are often for items such as Viagra which is not a family friendly item.
  • Once this happens your inbox will soon be swamped leaving you with little alternative than changing your email address. This can be very time consuming and inconvenient.
Step 2
Using Microsoft Outlock to block various senders

Microsoft Outlook offers the mans of blocking various senders. This will not work for spam as the same spam email will arrive again but from a different name. Spammers often work their way through the alphabet and back again.

To stop unwanted emails in Outlook:

  1. Highlight the appropriate email message.
  2. Select Message form the the toolbar.
  3. Scroll down to Block Sender
  4. The message that you have selected will be placed in the deleted folder, once you confirm the action.
  5. The sender will be blocked from sending further emails.
  6. Any that are sent will go directly to the deleted folder.
Step 3
Creating a rule in Microsoft Outlook

Creating a rule gives you various options.

  1. Select the message, as in the previous step.
  2. Scroll down and select "CREATE RULE FROM MESSAGE".
  3. Among the OPTIONS you can ensure that certain messages are AUTOMATICALLY DELETED.

Browsing these options it is obvious just how easy it is for spammers to bulk mail unsuspecting recipients..Unsolicited mail is big business for some, as well as a nuisance and worse for recipients..

Step 4
FIREWALLS AND SECURITY

Spam Filters

  • If you use the Internet then your computer should, in fact MUST, have a good virus protection and security software installed. This is VITAL to protect your identity and computer..
  • Ensure that your security software incorporates a firewall and spam filter as well as virus protection.
  • Microsoft Windows offers free Firewall protection. Check out the CONTROL PANEL and adjust the settings as required.
  • Microsoft Outlook's recent versions also offer spam filters, so use them.
  • If you have a spam folder set up in your email folders, any junk mail will be placed there automatically.
  • You can select just how much information is revealed to those sending you emails.

Very relevant zone! One other tip to add to your "don't" list... don't click on "unsubscribe" links in spam e-mails. I've heard that doing that results in even more spam.
